Montgo - the Elephant
Mountain - This is the unmistakeable mountain which dominates both
Javea and Denia. The profile of Montgo from the south is that of the head
of an Elephant, with the trunk being formed by the peninsular of the
Cabo de San Antonio and the Eye by a huge cave. The route described here
is a two car walk. The ascent is via the north eastern side of Montgó's
head, up the ridge which forms his forehead. The descent is along his
back to the tail. There are many paths to climb the Montgo, the official
one is from Denia (PRV152) which links with the ascent route described
here. |

How to get there by car: If doing the 2 car walk leave one car at the entrance to the "Urbanisation Los Lagos"(marked as "Mitjans" on the map. - From Javea, drive towards La Xara/ Jesus Pobre on the CV 735. About 500 metres before the turning to Jesus Pobre, turn right into the entrance to the urbanisation.)
Drive the other car back to Javea and then to La Plana de Iusta as follows: From Javea Old Town (Pueblo), take the Carretera de Denia CV 736 towards Denia. On reaching the top of the ridge (la Plana), ignore the right turn to the Cabo de San Antonio. Also pass the next turning on the right (the entrance to the San Geronimo Campo de Tiro (shooting range)). About 100metres further on, turn left on to a dirt track (Note large sign displaying the "Ruta Del Montgo"). Continue on the track for a few metres until you see a fork in the road and chain across the road. Park here. From Jávea - about 5 minutes drive.
