Urginea maritima - Sea Squill (Lily Family)

Spanish: Cebolla albarrana
Large bulb, white or red up to 18cm in diameter, often proturuding above the surface of the ground. The long, broad leaves are whithered by the flowering time in the autumn. The flower stalk has more than 50 flowers which are whoite with a green or purple mid-vein, spreading out like a star. There are several subspeacies. A poinsonous plant, the fleshy bulb-scales being used to treat heart disease. Locally used to malke rat poison. Often confused with the Asphodels, but this plant flowers during the autumn and the Asphodels are Spring flowers.
