Dianthus (sp)- Rock pink
The species photographed is commonly found in the Marina Alta. This looks like
Dianthus subacaulis as described by Innes (Wild flowers of Spain 1987) -
unfortunately other descriptions of this species look very different.
It
is a woody-based perennial - generally low, growing to about 20cm tall and
sometimes developing into a tufted plant with erect, rigid, deep green leaves.
The flowers are deep pink, solitary and terminally borne on short wiry stems,
each flower about 1cm across - the petals only about 5mm long, rounded
at the tips and almost entire. The small epicalyx scales are scarcely a third
of the length of the 1cm long calyx. (from Innes)
Seen from May into the summer.
