Very branched plant with hairy, ground-hugging stems and broad, opposite, lanceolate leaves at the bottom and narrow leaves at the top. Flower stems branched and hairy with flowers in loose bunches. Pink/purple petals, typically asymmetrically arranged on cylindrical calyx. The genus "Saponaria" is so named because the roots were used to make soap.
