Route Name: Benitachell Coastal Path (Smugglers Cove) Cala del Moraig to El Portet (Moraira) via Cala Llebeig (SLV-50)
Map

Benitachell (Benitaxell) Coastal Path : often referred to as the "Smugglers Cove"
Waymarks?: Yes - signposts and rock markings
Location and map reference : Start in Benitachell district, finish in El Portet, Moraira Map 823-III Poble Nou de Benitataxell)
Distance, approximate time and degree of difficulty: Approx. 6km, taking about 2hrs 30 mins; about 15 mins. shorter if retracing steps to start point. Occasionally the track comes close to edge of the cliff so those fearful of heights may feel uncomfortable at those points (though only for few minutes).Access to the playa de Llebeig requires a short rock scramble, then a walk down a fairly steep track which is rough in places, requiring some care; a walking stick is very useful here. The second part of the walk though the barranca to El Portet also requires some rock scrambling, with one fairly short elevated section, but is not really strenuous or difficult.
Grade:
Easy-Moderate (hill scramble) M,C,Scr
Main features of walk: A beautiful linear walk from above Cala de Moraig beach, Benitachell, south-east along a coastal trail, down to Cala de Llebeig (often referred to as Smugglers' Cove), then along the Barranco de la Cala, and finally through the residential area to El Portet, Moraira. The walk as far as Cala de Llebeig is described in more detail (as the "Route of the Cliffs") at website http://www.benitatxell.com/portal/english/index.htm. An alternative route retracing steps from Cala de Llebeig back to the start point may be preferred. That avoids the need for cars to be parked at either end of the walk, but it involves winding up a steep track on fairly rough terrain from the beach. Walkers taking the linear route but wishing to avoid the final few kms through the residential area to the end of the walk can park their cars at the end of the Barranca section, near the orange grove, rather than near the El Portet beach.

How to get there by car: To reach the start point above Cala del Moraig:

From Moraira take the road to Benitachell and about 2 kms before reaching the village, at Rusty’s Restaurant, turn right towards the Cumbre du Sol urbanisation. Wind your way up the hill to the top and at the large roundabout follow the signs down the other side to La Playa (Cala de Moraig). About 100m before you reach the small parking area well above the steep beach road you will see the waymark for the start of the walk, pointing up a short, steep incline through bushes.
Coming from Javea, pass Mas Y Mas supermarket on your left when entering Benitachell. Take first turning left at the next traffic lights to "Cumbre del Sol"; Follow the signs for the beach ("Playa" or "Cova de les Arcs"). The road dips down into a steep-sided gulley where there are few houses and widens, park here. (There is a board on the left which says "Morres de Benitatxell" and "Penysegats") . Walk up the truning on the right and you will see the waymark on the left, after about 100 metres.

Cars can be parked at the side to the road or, if preferred, at the small parking area mentioned above.

To leave a car(s) at the end point of the walk take the road from Moraira to El Portet. Park near the beach. Then drive back through Moraira and follow the directions above to start the walk.
